The l8a1: a very nice assault rifle. Dealing a good amount of damage. Very accurate, but when in scope mode, the l8a1's recoil is increased by a considerable amount.
The Barret: This sniper rifle is very strong, it can kill tanks, helicopters, planes, humvees etc... with ease. But, it's not very good against enemy foot soldiers, due to it's super high recoil, inaccuracy and the fact that it can only be used while in prone position.
For (Close quarter combat) CQC l8a1 for sure. No debate, it is one of the best of assault rifles out there for CQC. While the Barret is one of the worst sniper rifles for CQC. Due to the Barret's recoil, inaccuracy, and the fact that it can only be used while in prone position.
For (Urban Ops) UO this one depends. The l8a1 for maps like; Nerbil or Alberton, that have no vehicles, but for maps with vehicles, I would say the Barret is the winner.
For (Battle groups) BG I would say Barret, very good for taking down enemy helicopters, killing enemy tanks, destroying moving humvees and annihilating enemy jets that are taking off.
Summary: In the end, it really comes down to what type of game play you play. But for me personally, I would say the l8a1 is the winner.
